Chen-Ye Yuan’s clear and supple voice, matched with his facility to portray vastly different characters, have earned him international acclaim. He has established himself as one of the leading baritones at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. In recent years with NCPA he has performed the title character in Nabucco, a role he shared with Placido Domingo in Gilbert Deflo’s new production, conducted by Eugene Cohn in 2013 and led by maestro Massimo Zanetti in its 2014 revival. Additionally, Mr. Yuan performed the title role in the 2014 Alexei Stepanyuk production of Eugene Onegin under the baton of Valery Gergiev. In 2015, he sang the role of Amonasro in Francesco Micheli’s new production of Aïda conducted by Zubin Mehta as well as debuting the role of Carlo Gerard in David McVicar’s production of Andrea Chenier. In 2016 with NCPA, Yuan performed the role of Wolfram in Pier’Alli’s new production of Tannhäuser, Escamillo in Francesca Zambello’s production of Carmen, and Sergeant Vaskov in The Dawns Here Are Quiet, all of which were conducted by Lv Jia.

In 2017, Mr. Yuan reprises his Chou En-lai in Nixon in China for Houston Grand Opera, directed by James Robinson and conducted by Robert Spano, a role he has performed for multiple opera houses including San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Opera Colorado, Cincinnati Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra in New Zealand. Mr. Yuan has put his stamp on the title role Rigoletto having performed it in nine different productions, among which include Welsh National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Minnesota Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, Sacramento Opera, San Antonio Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and NCPA in Beijing. For his Rigoletto with the Welsh National Opera, The Evening Herald hailed him as “…outstanding in the title role, combining great vocal power with heartfelt emotion.”
